The short answer. A hotel spa suits you if you are staying at the hotel and want a pool and treatments next to your room. A shared banya complex suits you if you want a Russian steam room on a ticket and do not mind other visitors. A private banya rented whole suits you if it matters that only your own group is there. BANSKЪ is a private banya in the village of Krasnaya Polyana: for the length of your visit the entire 1500 sq m estate is closed for one group. A visit for up to 5 guests costs 30,000 RUB per hour in low season (April–November) and 35,000 RUB per hour in high season (December–March), with a three-hour minimum. Hotel spa: a pool, treatments and your room nearby
A hotel spa usually means a pool, a sauna or hammam, a relaxation area and treatment rooms for massage and beauty care. It is primarily for hotel guests; many hotels also admit outside visitors with a day ticket or a treatment booking. The space is shared: you are in the pool and the sauna together with other guests, and your time is set by the spa's opening hours or the length of the ticket.
The strength of the format is convenience. If you are staying at the hotel, you go down in a robe, with no taxi, and the treatment menu is often broad: several kinds of massage, wraps, face and body care. Russian steaming with a venik and a banya master is less common in hotel spas — the core there is different: the dry heat of a sauna, the wet steam of a hammam and treatments in the cabins.
Shared banya complex: a steam room on a ticket
A banya complex with shared admission is closer to a banya in the familiar sense. You buy entry to a session and share the steam rooms, plunges and lounges with other visitors. Such complexes often have several types of steam room and banya masters on staff, with steaming programmes paid separately. Pricing is per person, so for one or two guests it is usually cheaper than renting a whole banya.
The drawback is the same as with a spa: you are not alone. Other visitors can get in the way of a celebration or a private conversation, and the session schedule sets the pace for you. Some complexes also rent separate houses or zones to a group — check what is included directly with them.
A private banya rented whole: the entire estate for one group
With a private banya you rent not a place in the steam room but the whole banya for the length of the visit. There are no other guests, you choose the programme and the breaks between rounds, and the banya masters and massage therapists work only with your group. You pay for time rather than entry: at BANSKЪ the base rate covers up to 5 guests, and each additional guest is paid separately — 6,000 RUB per hour in low season and 7,000 RUB in high season.
The 1500 sq m of gated, guarded grounds hold eight spaces: a wood-fired steam room with linden benches (from 70°C), a 15-metre pool heated year-round, a cauldron heated over an open fire under the sky (39°C), a cold plunge with water from a mountain spring (7–10°C), a lounge by the fireplace, a massage room, swings and a veranda with a mountain view, and a restaurant with its own kitchen. If several rows apply at once — you want the steam room with a venik, a massage and nobody else around — a private banya with optional treatments fits. If the priority is face and body treatments on a short visit without travel, the honest choice is the spa in your own hotel.
Why BANSKЪ is a banya, not a spa
"Spa" is often used for any place with water and massage. At BANSKЪ the core of the visit is the Russian wood-fired steam room and the contrast: the heat of the steam room, the hot cauldron under the open sky, the cold spring plunge, then rest by the fireplace with tea. The banya master tunes the temperature, intensity and length of the steaming to how each guest feels.
What a spa calls treatments are banya steaming and massage here. One collective aroma steaming for the whole group and one classic steaming for each guest are already included in the visit price; everything else is optional. There is no hotel at the banya: overnight accommodation is not offered, and guests stay at hotels in Krasnaya Polyana. Banya steaming: programmes and prices
Of everything a banya offers, steaming is the closest thing to spa treatments: it is bodywork, only in the steam room and with a venik. The included steaming uses eucalyptus and oak veniks. Other programmes are optional and priced per guest:

Closest to skin care is the honey-and-salt steaming: a warm heat-up, a honey rub and rolling with aromatic salt. The soap wash cleanses the body with a birch venik and dense soapy lather. The signature steaming lasts 80–90 minutes and combines four-handed steaming, contrast cooling with mineral water, honey-and-salt steaming with a citrus rub, a soap wash, rest in the pool and a juniper-venik scalp massage. Massage after steaming
The estate has a separate massage room. BANSKЪ therapists work with natural oils and Acqua di Parma cosmetics. Massage is built into the banya session, usually after steaming, when the body is already warm.

If you came for the spa side, plan one steaming and one massage per guest: the classic steaming is already included, and a 60-minute classic or lymphatic drainage massage adds 10,900 RUB. Short programmes — feet, hands or neck for 6,100 RUB and the 15-minute express for 5,900 RUB — are often taken as an addition to steaming. Water and contrast: pool, cauldron and plunge
In a spa, water mostly means a pool. In a banya, water is part of the rhythm: after the steam room comes the hot cauldron over the fire under the open sky (39°C), then the cold spring-water plunge (7–10°C), then rest by the fireplace or on the veranda. What a private banya visit costs
A visit for up to 5 guests is 30,000 RUB per hour from April to November and 35,000 RUB per hour from December to March. The minimum is three hours: from 90,000 RUB in low season and from 105,000 RUB in high season. For a group of five that is 18,000 RUB and 21,000 RUB per guest for three hours, with the included steaming, pool, cauldron and plunge. An additional guest is 6,000 RUB and 7,000 RUB per hour. Children under 8 are free, ages 8 to 14 get 50% off. For two there is a separate rate: 60,000 RUB for two hours in low season and 70,000 RUB in high season.
The price also includes a robe, terry slippers, a banya cap, towels and sheets, an Acqua di Parma amenity set and natural massage oils, and Krasnaya Polyana tea with chestnut and Altai honey and homemade preserves. BANSKЪ is at 9 Vodopadnaya Street in the village of Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi, and is open round the clock. The kitchen cooks from the restaurant menu; some dishes are prepared to pre-order no later than one day before the visit, so it is easiest to discuss the table when you book.
